We live in our own interpretation of the signals around us. The information, the events, the situations we experience are only a portion of what's happening, but still we try to make sense of the partial view through the indications we receive. As a user experience designer, I am aware that there are a lot of things I don't know, but I'm driven to find out more by curiosity and a desire to empathize with others. In my work, I conduct research with people in an attempt to understand their motivations and the actions they take to achieve a goal. These interviews or observations are like "signals" that I attempt to understand within in a larger, often commercial, context that can have fuzzy parameters. They guide me toward a better framing of a problem and ultimately toward design solutions.
As I expand my design practice into new domains and methods, I know that I won't always know where my exploration will take me, both in the larger sense of my career path or within individual projects. But that's ok; that's part of growing. In this blog, I'll consider signals emerging from my design work, personal explorations and interests and try to make sense of them within the occasional fog of uncertainty. I'll attempt to be ok with not always knowing and continue to ask questions that lead me either to greater clarity or comfort with what I don't yet know. Foggy uncertainty can be a beautiful, not-black-and-white place to be. It's where discovery happens. Go there with me?
